There are almost fifty 5 star hotels in Mallorca, one of Pure Luxury Hotels favourite destinations, with a heavy concentration in the South West of the island in and around the Island's vibrant capital of Palma. The range of luxury hotels in Mallorca ranges from recognised luxury chains such as Jumeirah and St Regis to destination spas and independently run unique properties. If you are more interested in luxury boutique hotels Mallorca doesn't disappoint, particulary in Palma with wonderfully unique properties in the heart of the City such as the Palacio Ca Sa Galesa.
Some of our favourite luxury hotels in Mallorca are the Castillo Son Vida with its spectacular terrace vista across the bay of Palma, the Jumeirah Port Soller perched around the cliftop above the port and town of Soller in the North and the Gran Hotel Son Net nestled in a luscious valley in Puigpunyent. These 3 hotels feature in our blog post Terrific Terraces of the Tramuntana.
In the island's capital Palma there's a plentiful supply of smart city hotels to be found amongst the cobbled streets, try Puro Hotel, Can Cera or Palacio ca sa Galesa set in a Palatial 16th Century building. The magnificent Castillo Son Vida Hotel sits in the mountain above Palma. It has a stunning terrace with arguably one of the most breathtaking views of any hotel, overlooking the bay of Palma and its glorious gothic Catherdral, perfect for pre or post dinner drinks and a beautiful wedding venue. Further around the bay of Palma heading towards the smart resorts of Illetas, Bendinat and Puerto Portals you will find the St Regis Mardavall, the recently refurbished Gran Melia de Mar and the Hospes Maricel all stunning sea front luxury 5 star hotels.
If you want to stay at a more intimate hotel situated in beautiful surroundings you could try Son Net or for luxury spa hotels try La Residencia, Son Brull or Reads Hotel which was listed in Tatlers 2013 Top 50 Spa's of the World. Equally as stunning is Cap Rocat a former mlitary fortress, completely refurbished to enhance the glorious architecture of the original building.
This little luxury gem of a mediteranean island is steadily changing its reputation from a party island to a go to luxury destination. Recent developments such as the new Philipe Starck designed Port Adriano aimed at enticing the worlds superyacht community is part of the luxury market image change of the island. Even the party capital of the island - Magalluf has not escaped the local governments ambition to clean up the island with one side of the resort already undergoing an extensive rebranding, with a change of name to Calvia Beach resort, two modern Melia hotels The Wave House and The Beach House sitting either end of the beach with the newly opened Nikki Beach next door to the Beach House and the business owners in between being asked to smarten up their image to attract an altogether different, well heeled young crowd.
The islands first Grand Hyatt Hotel and Resort development opened in 2016 and just 3 years ago saw the opening of Castell Son Claret a sublimely restored 18th century castle set in a 325 acre estate and independently owned luxury boutique hotels Can Calatrava and Can Alomar add to the collection of boutique luxury boltholes available in Palma.
You really are spoilt for choice for things to do and see on the island. Mallorca has a rich cultural history of art and architecture, a day wandering around the cobbled streets of Palma is a joy although in the height of Summer it may not be so much of a pleasure from midday onwards. However you can always jump in to one of the many air conditioned designer shops or art galleries or visit the magnificent gothic cathedral, failing that there are ample pavement cafes and tapas bars and restaurants to choose from for a cold refreshment and bite of lunch. A great alternative to walking is to take a horse drawn carriage tour.
We would highly recommend anyone visiting Mallorca to go to the capital Palma. Half of the island's population lives in the capital and it surprises most who visit, it's so vibrant and cosmopolitan. Visit first thing in the morning and you can catch the traditional market for all of the fresh local produce and craft stalls and in the evening it's a buzzing hub of locals and tourists alike enjoying the culinary delights on offer in Palma's many excellent restaurants.
You could take a day out to visit the stunning Islet of Cabrera, a National Park or the Caves at Manacor. A drive through the mountains via Valdemossa and Deia towards Pollensa showcases some stunning scenery.
Families are really well catered for on the island's many beautiful beaches with watersports and beach shacks for refreshement. There are also waterparks, a marineland, an aquarium, mini golf and horse riding among the vast aray of activities on offer to keep the brood occupied and happy. There are a number of family friendly luxury 5 star hotels, including our favourites, the Lindner Hotel in Bendinat andthe St Regis Mardavall in Portals.
For seafront and luxury beach hotels in Mallorca, take a look at the Hospes Maricel, the St Regis Mardavall or the Gran Melia de Mar.
There are so many excellent, quality, places to go we couldn't possible name all of our favourites here. They include casual beachside fish restaurants, smart Italian dining and upmarket Michelin star establishments. Simply ask us for our advice and opinions when you book your chosen luxury hotel and we will be sure to know of a few great places nearby.
